Moxibustion (Moxa)
Healing of Moxibustion
Expelling Coldness and Dampness
Introduction to Moxibustion healing
Moxibustion, or the use of burning Moxa, has been used by Chinese medicine practitioners for thousands of years. Moxa healing is performed by burning mugwort, or ai cao (艾草), which generates gentle warm heat to expel internal coldness and dampness. In this way, it strengthens:
- Blood circulation;
- Flow of qi, the vital life energy.
Traditional methods of performing Moxa treatments are:
- Direct Moxa – burning the Moxa directly on the surface of the skin in a controlled manner. This method can scar the skin when using corn-shaped Moxa, but can be avoided by using thread-like Moxa.
- Indirect Moxa – burning Moxa with a gap between the Moxa and the skin. This gap can be created from salt, garlic, ginger, air, an acupuncture needle, or herbs. Different healing effects are produced from these materials.
Urashima Moxa – sticky Moxa:
At Eastern Healing Center, we specialize in applying Urashima Moxa, which has mild heat and a sticky base. It is a type of indirect Moxa. It has a foil-covered base to help evenly distribute heat. It is made of the fine quality mugwort. Hence, it works the best to move the qi and help expel the coldness or dampness with comfort. It gives patients a very soothing experience. In many cases, the patients fall asleep while the moxibustion is performed on them.
